Importing Home Inventory Entries
First things first: Please read this entire page before actually attempting to add entries to your spreadsheet – it will make a lot more sense after you read the entire post.
Let’s start out with a simple example that includes six entries: Garage, Top Shelf, Box 1, Toolbox, Holiday Items, and Hammer.
- Please open this Google Sheets spreadsheet.
- Make a copy of the spreadsheet by tapping on FILE | MAKE A COPY.
- Let’s add a Garage row to the second row of the spreadsheet.
- We’ll put the email that we log into Everspruce under the email column.
- We’ll put “Garage” under the entry_name column.
- The entry_type should be “area” (entry_type can only be one of three values: “area”, “box”, or “item”).
- And for entry_description we’ll say “Where all my random stuff lives :)”

- Now let’s add a Top Shelf row to the third row of the spreadsheet:
- We’ll put the email that we log into Everspruce under the email column.
- We’ll put “Top Shelf” under the entry_name column.
- The entry_type for Top Shelf could be considered an “area” or “box”. For this example, we’ll call it an “area”.
- And for entry_description we’ll say “Top Shelf of Garage”
- We want the Top Shelf to be nested under Garage so we’ll put “Garage” in the parent_entry_name column. That way, when you navigate to the Garage entry, you’ll see the Top Shelf entry underneath it. And conversely, when you navigate to Top Shelf in Everspruce, you will see that it is nested under the Garage entry. Note: Make sure that the entry_name “Garage” from row 2 and parent_entry_name “Garage” from row 3 are spelled exactly the same to establish this relationship between each other.

- Now let’s add a Box 1 row to the fourth row of the spreadsheet:
- We’ll put the email that we log into Everspruce under the email column.
- We’ll put “Box 1” under the entry_name column.
- The entry_type for Box 1 is obviously a “box”
- And for entry_description we’ll keep it blank. This gives us flexibility to add whatever we want into the box without having to change the description.
- We want Box 1 to be nested under Top Shelf so we’ll put “Top Shelf” in the parent_entry_name column. That way, when you navigate to the Top Shelf entry in Everspruce, you’ll see the Box 1 entry underneath it. And conversely, when you navigate to Box 1, you will see that it is nested under the Top Shelf entry. Note: Make sure that the entry_name “Top Shelf” from row 3 and parent_entry_name “Top Shelf” from row 4 are spelled exactly the same to establish this relationship between each other.

- Now let’s add a Toolbox row to the fifth row of the spreadsheet:
- We’ll put the email that we log into Everspruce under the email column.
- We’ll put “Toolbox” under the entry_name column.
- The entry_type for Toolbox is a “box”
- And for entry_description we’ll keep it blank. This gives us flexibility to add whatever we want into the box without having to change the description.
- We want Toolbox to be nested under Top Shelf so we’ll put “Top Shelf” in the parent_entry_name column. That way, when you navigate to the Top Shelf entry in Everspruce, you’ll see the Toolbox entry underneath it. And conversely, when you navigate to Toolbox, you will see that it is nested under the Top Shelf entry. Note: Make sure that the entry_name “Top Shelf” from row 3 and parent_entry_name “Top Shelf” from row 5 are spelled exactly the same to establish this relationship between each other.

- Now let’s add a Holiday Items row to the sixth row of the spreadsheet:
- We’ll put the email that we log into Everspruce under the email column.
- We’ll put “Holiday Items” under the entry_name column.
- The entry_type for Holiday Items is “item”
- And for entry_description we’ll say “Halloween and Christmas decorations”
- Holiday Items are located in Box 1 so we’ll put “Box 1” in the parent_entry_name column. That way, when you navigate to the Box 1 entry in Everspruce, you’ll see the Holiday Items entry underneath it. And conversely, when you navigate to Holiday Items, you will see that it is nested under the Box 1 entry. Note: Make sure that the entry_name “Box 1” from row 4 and parent_entry_name “Box 1” from row 6 are spelled exactly the same to establish this relationship between each other.

- Now let’s add a Hammer row to the seventh row of the spreadsheet:
- We’ll put the email that we log into Everspruce under the email column.
- We’ll put “Hammer” under the entry_name column.
- The entry_type for Hammer is “item”
- And for entry_description we’ll say “Halloween and Christmas decorations”
- The Hammer is located in the Toolbox so we’ll put “Toolbox” in the parent_entry_name column. That way, when you navigate to the Toolbox entry in Everspruce, you’ll see the Hammer entry underneath it. And conversely, when you navigate to Hammer, you will see that it is nested under the Toolbox entry. Note: Make sure that the entry_name “Toolbox” from row 5 and parent_entry_name “Toolbox” from row 7 are spelled exactly the same to establish this relationship between each other.

- Optional step: A lot of users keep it simple and stick with the fields we’ve outlined above, but if you’re more interested in a home insurance inventory app, then there are also optional fields you can add to items only (these don’t apply to boxes or areas):
- entry_item_quantity: This field represents the quantity of the item and is an integer.
- entry_item_value: This field represents the value of the item and can be a two decimal place number (or whole number).
- entry_item_notes: This field represents any notes you want to jot down for your item.
- entry_item_warranty_date: This field represents the warranty date of the item.
- entry_item_purchase_date: This field represents the date you purchased the item.
- entry_item_serial_number: This field represents the serial number of your item.
- entry_item_manufacturer: This field represents the manufacturer of your item.
- entry_item_model: This field represents the model of your item.
- entry_item_instruction_manual_url: This field represents the instruction manual url of your item.
- Now that we’ve added all our entries, the next thing to do is to send an email with the subject line “Import entries” to carol@everspruceapp.com that includes a link to the spreadsheet.
- It will usually take between 24 and 72 hours for us to process your import file but on weekends and holidays it could take longer.
- Once we’ve processed your entries we will email you back to let you know your home inventory import was completed.

A couple additional notes to be aware of:
- Please ensure all data is accurate and there aren’t any special characters in any of the data.
- You can add as many entries as you would like, but anything over 50 entries will require a subscription to access.

I would like to add the url site for Manuel’s so I can get rid of them how do I do that?
Hi Karen – you simply need to open Everspruce and go to HOME | SETTINGS (the gear icon in the upper right) | ADDITIONAL FIELDS | and then go down to the last switch “Item Instruction Manual URL” and turn it on. From there, every time you add or edit a new item entry, Everspruce will give you the field to input your manual URL. Hopefully that helps – cheers!
Hi, still no Android version ?
If you need beta testers, I’m interested 🙂
Thank you
Hey Cedric – Android isn’t released yet, and it is taking longer than we expected, but we’re definitely still working on it. Hopefully we’ll launch a beta version before EOY.
Thank you for your interest!
